Legislation Changes - 1 October 2006
- Compulsory retirement for those under 65 will be unlawful and employers will have to consider requests to work beyond this age
- Ageism will be illegal and all policies relating to recruitment and promotion including application forms and interview techniques will become age-neutral
- National minimum wage increases from £5.05 to £5.35 per hour and the development rate from £4.25 to £4.45 per hour. The rate for 16-17 years increases from £3.00 to £3.30
- Fire certificates are abolished and the employer will have to carry out a fire risk assessment. The assessment is intended to help employers identify the main areas of risk and decide on the nature and extent of the precautions they need to take
